Journey Cam GPS Video Recorder — iPhone, iOS 18 or later

Coming soon on the App Store

Journey Cam is a private iPhone dashcam and travel journey camera for trips, rides and outings — a coastal ride, a mountain pass, a track day on a private circuit, a long trip, a walk. It draws speed, position, direction and altitude into the video itself and makes no network connections at all. Loop recording bounds itself so it never fills the phone. No account, no cloud, nothing transmitted.

    Before you use it

Interacting with this app in any way while you are moving can cause a collision resulting in serious injury or death — however you are travelling. Touching it, holding it, looking at it, adjusting it: any of it takes attention you need elsewhere. Use it only when it is safe to do so, for you and for everyone around you, and if you are in any doubt, don't. These are conditions of your license, not advice — using the app otherwise ends your right to use it. The app is not a safety system, not an assistance system of any kind, not an emergency service, and not a substitute for paying attention to what is around you. The phone gets warm while recording, especially on a charger and especially with both cameras running; iOS manages heat, and if iOS stops the camera the app simply saves the clip — the app reads no thermal sensor and takes no thermal policy of its own. Every reading comes from the phone's own sensors and carries their errors — this is a recorder, not a measuring instrument, and it proves nothing. Recordings can be lost, and loop recording deletes older segments on purpose; the app is not a backup service. How you travel and where you place your device are yours alone: we give no instructions about either and have assessed none of it. Finding out what applies to you — of any kind, from any source — and following it is your responsibility.

Front and rear, at the same time

Journey Cam records from the rear camera, the front camera, or both at once — into a single video. One camera fills the picture and the other appears as a small inset in the corner, so one file shows the view ahead and the view behind at the same time. You choose which camera is the main one.

Two cameras at once record at up to 1080p at 30 frames per second. That is a hardware limit of running two cameras simultaneously on iPhone, not a restriction the app imposes; with a single camera the app records up to 4K. The device runs warmer with both cameras going.

This is a dual camera video recorder as much as a front and rear dashcam: the same file can hold the road, the trail or the water ahead and the rider, passenger or cabin behind.

    Choose the rear lens

On phones with more than one rear lens you can choose which one records: Ultra Wide, Wide or Telephoto. Only the lenses your particular iPhone actually has are offered — nothing is listed that your device cannot do.

The lens is chosen in settings and applied to the next recording. Like the camera and the quality, it cannot be changed part-way through a recording, so there is no reason to touch the phone while you are moving.

    Why this one is different

A continuous record of where you go, how fast, and at what hours is sensitive data. A private dashcam app should keep it on the device, and this one does.

The app has no networking code in it at all. There is nothing to upload and nothing to transmit. It is an offline dashcam in the plainest sense: first launch, recording, overlay, gallery and export all work without a connection.

One exception, stated plainly: the App Store screen contacts Apple, as it must. Nothing else in the app contacts anything.

    What it does

    Both cameras at once

Rear, front, or both together in a single video — one fills the picture, the other sits as a small inset in the corner

    You pick the main camera

Two cameras at once record up to 1080p30; a single camera goes up to 4K

    Rear lens selection

Ultra Wide, Wide or Telephoto — only the lenses your iPhone actually has are offered

    Overlay burned in

Speed, position, direction, altitude, date and time, elapsed trip

    Layers you choose

Every layer switches on or off — the video shows exactly what you picked

    Loop recording

Keeps the last 3, 5 or 10 segments, oldest replaced automatically

    Keep one loop segment

While a loop is running, keep one segment so the ring cannot overwrite it. Loop segments only — saved recordings are already permanent.

    Optional audio

Off by default — while it is off the app never asks for the microphone

    Gallery and export

Playback, bulk delete, and export as real .mp4 files to Photos or the share sheet

    Offline, always

km/h or mph, metric or imperial — and no network connections at all

    Recording length

    1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes per clip

Recording length is 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes. Loop recording keeps the last 3, 5 or 10 segments, depending on the setting you choose.

    However you travel

Journey Cam does not assume how you are moving. Mounted on a handlebar it works as a motorbike camera or a bike camera; in a pocket or on a strap it records a hike; on a boat or in a car it records the same way. The overlay is the same, the files are the same, and everything stays on the phone.

Because it is a GPS video recorder as well as a camera, the record of a journey carries its own context: how fast, which direction, how high, and when — drawn into the picture rather than kept in a separate file that can drift away from the video.

    How does loop recording work?

Pick a recording length, then switch Loop on. Each recording ends at that length, the next begins, and once there are more than you chose to keep, the oldest is deleted. The default — 3 segments of 3 minutes — keeps roughly the last nine minutes and never grows beyond it.

There is one length setting, not one for clips and another for segments. A loop segment is simply a recording that has another one after it.

It records only while the app is on screen. iOS does not allow any app to use the camera in the background. Leave the app, lock the phone, or take a call, and the clip is saved and recording ends.

    Dependencies

Third-party dependencies: none. Not "minimal" — none.

The entire app is Apple frameworks: AVFoundation, CoreLocation, CoreImage, Photos, StoreKit, SwiftUI, UniformTypeIdentifiers. No ad SDK, no attribution kit, no crash reporter, no analytics, no remote configuration, no networking library.

    Designed for iOS

Built with Apple frameworks only, for iPhone on iOS 18 or later.

No account, no analytics, no cloud storage. Recordings live on the phone and are removed with the app.

    Questions

Does this dashcam app work offline?

It works entirely offline. First launch, recording, overlay, gallery and export all work without a connection. Not a degraded mode — the whole app.

Can it record the front and rear cameras at the same time?

Yes. Journey Cam records from the rear camera, the front camera, or both at once into a single video. In both-camera mode one camera fills the picture and the other appears as a small inset in the corner, so one file shows the view ahead and the view behind at the same time. You choose which camera is the main one.

Why is dual camera limited to 1080p30?

Running two cameras simultaneously is a hardware limit on iPhone: two streams at once top out at 1080p at 30 frames per second. Single-camera recording goes up to 4K. The device also runs warmer with both cameras running.

Can I choose which rear lens records?

On phones with more than one rear lens you can choose Ultra Wide, Wide or Telephoto. Only the lenses your particular iPhone actually has are offered. Like the camera and the quality, the lens is chosen in settings and applied to the next recording, so there is no reason to touch the phone while you are moving.

    Does it upload my recordings?

No. Nothing is uploaded, because there is nothing to upload to. Recordings stay in the app's own storage on your iPhone until you delete them or export them yourself.

    How does loop recording work?

You pick a recording length, then switch Loop on. Each recording ends at that length and the next begins; once there are more segments than you chose to keep, the oldest is deleted automatically.

Can I stop a loop segment being overwritten?

Yes — while a loop is running you can keep one segment, and the ring will not replace it. It is one at a time, and it applies to loop segments only: a saved recording is already permanent, so there is nothing to protect it from. If you want to hold on to more than that, export the segment and it is yours outside the app.

    What recording lengths are available?

You can set each clip to 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes. Loop recording keeps the last 3, 5 or 10 segments, depending on the setting you choose.

Does it record in the background?

No. iOS does not allow any app to use the camera in the background. If you leave the app, lock the phone or take a call, the clip is saved and recording ends.

    What does the overlay show?

Speed, position, direction of travel, altitude, date and time, and elapsed trip — burned into the video itself. Every layer can be switched on or off.
